Engineering and Design- Planning for Next Year

Writer's picture: Mrs. GMrs. G

I am wanting to make the most of being at home this summer and get some things ready for next year. No matter how the school year of 2020-2021 begins, there are some easy ways to prepare for whatever happens.

I have started making slideshows for big units that we teach in 2nd grade in my district. In these slide shows, there are links to videos and read alouds. I can use these for distance learning, or in the classroom for whole group instruction.

I like to start all science lessons with a KWL chart to get an understanding of what students already know. So we would start with that "K" and "W" sections of the chart.

(The camera at the bottom of the screen is a reminder to come back to this chart throughout the lesson)

The next slide has a link to this SciShow Kids video "Be an Engineer". After watching this video, I might revisit the KWL chart to see if students would like to add anything to the chart.

Next, we are going to be introduced to a problem in this SciShow Kids video.

We will begin to go over the steps of the Engineering and Design process.

Students will start to draw out some designs to solve the problem that was addressed.

We will watch one more SciShow Kids video to help us through the Engineering and Design process.

Now that students have been through the process, have them stop and think. This would be another good time to revisit the KWL chart and add questions and new learning.

Introduce the read aloud. Ask students what they think this book might be about.

If you don't have this book, this is a great video of the read aloud. For digital learning, I love to use the Kindle version of books and share my screen so that students can really good a good look at the illustrations while I read.

The last part of this lesson, is to invite students to think like an engineer and talk about the book. In my classroom, I have a "Wonder Wall". Students write their wonder on a post- it and stick it to the wall!

It's fun to see this wall grow throughout the year!

I will be adding these to my TPT store throughout the summer, but I am sharing my Engineering Power Point, for FREE, to you! Hopefully this inspires you and helps you create useful things for your classroom next year!
